Angry Birds tops 1 billion downloads

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Addictive touchscreen game Angry Birds has had its one billionth download, prompting publishers Rovio to issue a short video thanking its fans and promising ‘more amazing things coming soon’.

The game first launched on iOS in December 2009, and has had three subsequent editions, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, and Angry Birds Space.

Rovio made US$106.3 million in revenue last year, almost a third of which came not from game downloads but related merchandising and licensing activities.

Many have pointed out that the boy in the new video looks a lot like the kid from iPad game Casey’s Contraptions – he even has a Rube Goldberg-esque machine behind him – suggesting that Rovio may be working on a new version of that title in addition to more Angry Birds material.
